Sister Margaret Egan addresses those gathered for her farewell party.
Sister Margaret Egan, SC, educator for sixty years.

Dedicated, inspirational educator, a woman of integrity and wisdom, mentor, friend, “a class act.” These words and more were repeated time and again on Wednesday, May 8, when faculty, students, staff, Sisters of Charity, and friends gathered to honor Sister Margaret Egan for forty-eight years of service at the College of Mount Saint Vincent and sixty years in education.

Elected last March to serve on the Sisters of Charity 2019–2023 Leadership Council, Sister Margaret’s illustrious career in education will come to a close on Monday, May 13, when her class, Assessment and Remediation of Reading Disabilities, is ended. Sister Margaret began teaching at the Mount in 1971 and served as Chair of the Teacher Education Department from 1988 to 2006.

Students honored Sister Margaret on Wednesday just before her farewell party.

Dr. MaryEllen Sullivan, Chair of Teacher Education from 2006 to 2018 and current Associate Professor, honored Sister Margaret with these words:

Look around this room at all of the people who took the time to join us, to let you know what a special part of their lives you have been…what a special part of this college you have been…forty-eight years serving and living the motto, “Teach me goodness, discipline and knowledge.”…So, thank you. May God continue to bless you and very simply—we so dearly love you Margaret!

Current Chair of Teacher Education Dr. Erika Gillette followed adding, “Sister Margaret is someone that inspires all of us to be better. Everyone I meet that is an alum of CMSV or has met her in the schools we work with, asks about her and how she is doing. Her love, dedication, and passion for children and their education will continue through her students and everyone she has met.”

Moved and humbled, Sister Margaret said, “If I may use a part of one of my favorite psalms—Psalm 115— ‘not to me, O God, but to your name give the glory.’”

Sister Margaret will begin serving as Councilor on the Sisters of Charity Leadership Team on July 1. Congratulations, Sister Margaret, on your well-deserved recognition, and thank you for your sixty years of dedicated service in education.
