“Her dedicated service to patients, their families and staff have been an inspiration for us all.”

Sr.-Barton-2014Sister Claire Marian Barton (Helene) was born on September 12, 1925 in New Dorp, Staten Island, one of three children born to Samuel and Helen Cole Barton. Helene attended Our Lady Queen of Peace and Saint Louis Academy Elementary Schools and Notre Dame Academy High School in Staten Island before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on February 1, 1947. Sister Claire received her RN in Nursing from Saint Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing and a BS in Nursing from Saint John’s University.

Sister Claire’s entire ministry was spent in hospitals managed and staffed by the Congregation. Her first assignment was to Saint Joseph Hospital in Yonkers where she worked in the maternity-delivery room. In 1950 she was assigned to Saint Vincent’s Hospital, Manhattan, where she remained until 1964 serving in administrative roles. In 1964, Sister Claire began her many years of ministry on Staten Island. In Saint Vincent’s Hospital she filled many positions including Nursing Supervisor, Coordinator of Home Care, and Administrator of Obstetrics and GYN. In 1982 Sister Claire became Chaplain at Bayley-Seton Hospital, previously the United States Public Health Hospital. She remained in this position until 1998 and then continued her service as a volunteer until 2004 when she retired to Mount Saint Vincent Convent. At the time of her retirement Sister Claire received the following honor… “As a supervisor, administrator, chaplain and volunteer, Sister Claire has brought the mission of the Sisters of Charity of New York to each of her assignments. Her dedicated service to patients, their families and staff have been an inspiration for us all.” In 2010 when she moved to the Convent of Mary the Queen where she became known for her quiet, prayerful interest in the Sisters.

We rejoice with Sister Claire Marian now as she meets her God face to face and enjoys eternal peace and happiness with the God whom she served so devotedly as a Sister of Charity.
