“Sister Caroline’s unique style of kindness and compassion will be remembered by students she taught and counseled and the Sisters with whom she lived.”

Sister Caroline McGinn (Sister Maureen Thomas) was born in New York City on February 12, 1932, one of four daughters and three sons born to Thomas and Bridget Elliott McGinn. She attended Sacred Heart School in the Bronx and Cathedral High School before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on February 2, 1950. Sister Thomas received a BA in Math from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, an MA in Guidance from Seton Hall University and an MA in Theology from Fordham University. She later earned NYS permanent certification in Math and Guidance, and her NYC License as a Guidance Counselor.

Sister Caroline’s ministry in education encompassed elementary to high school as both teacher and guidance counselor. She was first missioned to Resurrection School in Rye. Her other teaching assignments included Visitation School, Saint Augustine School, Saint Athanasius School and Blessed Sacrament School, all located in the Bronx. She also taught in Saint Patrick School on Mott Street. In 1970 she was sent to Cathedral High School where she served as Guidance Counselor for the students in grades 10, 11 and 12. Her next ministry was at Saint Peter’s High School on Staten Island where she was Guidance Counselor for grades 9 and 10. Her final ministry experience was with the New York City Board of Education where she worked as Guidance Counselor for the public school system. In her retirement Sister Caroline served as a caregiver to family members. Sister Caroline went to live at the Convent of Mary the Queen in Yonkers in 2008 where she continued to participate in the prayer and community life of the Congregation. In 2015 Sister Caroline moved to Saint Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry.

Sister Caroline’s unique style of kindness and compassion will be remembered by the students she taught and counseled and the Sisters with whom she lived. We rejoice with her now as God welcomes her into eternal peace and as she is united with her family, friends and all the Sisters of Charity who have gone before her.

May you forever enjoy the reward of your labors, Sister Caroline.
