Leaders in research, advocates of health-care reform, and dedicated care-givers, our Sisters serve as doctors, nurses, therapists, administrators, and chaplains at many health care facilities in the metropolitan area of New York.
We established several hospitals in the region, including St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in Manhattan, St. Vincent's Hospital in Westchester, St. Vincent's Hospital and Bayley Seton Hospital on Staten Island, and St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers.
From its humble beginnings in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan in 1849, St. Vincent's has grown to a renowned modern medical center with new technology, allowing its dedicated staff to respond to emerging health needs. The extensive list of services offered includes nursing homes, hospice services, and home health care.
In the late 1990s, the Sisters of Charity were instrumental in bringing about the merger of eight hospitals located in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Westchester. This newly created corporation is now known as Saint Vincents Catholic Medical Centers of New York, the region's largest Catholic health care provider.
St. Joseph's Medical Center, founded in 1888, remains fully committed to the community it serves in Yonkers. The Center now offers a Family Health Center, a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and a Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center. St. Joseph's also provides birthing services and elderly care, and operates several Urgent Care Centers and a nursing home.
