Since 1996, the Elizabeth Seton Women's Center has served as a place for women to gather, study, share, reflect, and grow. The Center promotes the holistic development of women so their experience and gifts may be recognized and valued by themselves and others. It also fosters the development of women's voices in seeking justice in their own lives and in the lives of others.
The Center is located in Manhattan, New York City, in the Blessed Sacrament Convent on the upper West Side. Over the years, the Center has hosted seminars, workshops, and courses that focus on women's spirituality, health issues, parenting, and the law as it affects women.
A small sampling of recent offerings include "Women's Writing Circle," Women's Spirituality Group," "A Peace Gathering," and "Right Livelihood: Women's Spiritual Path in the Workplace."
The majority of the women who use the Center live in the five boroughs of New York City, but women also travel to the Center from Westchester County, New Jersey, Long Island, and Connecticut to attend programs and workshops. The Elizabeth Seton Women's Center welcomes all women without distinction of age, ethnic group, income, or religious belief.
"While we have many participants who come from the Catholic faith, we have women who come from many other faith traditions," explains Sister Arleen Ketchum, S.C., who has directed the Center since its opening. "We practice inclusiveness - we want everyone to be able to gather around the Spirit of God."
