In 1947, the Conference of Mother Seton's Daughters met. These were the major Superiors of the North American congregations, who traced their origins to Elizabeth Ann Seton. They had two purposes: to advance the cause of Elizabeth Ann SetonŐs canonization and to strengthen the bond of unity among them.
On September 14, 1975, the Federation achieved its first purpose when Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized; it then began to concentrate on uniting its various congregations.
In 1990, the Federation changed its bylaws to admit as members those North America Congregations who shared in the tradition of Charity through an adaptation of the Rule of Saint Vincent de Paul. The name was changed to the Elizabeth Seton Federation.
In 1996, the name was changed again to reflect Federation membership: The Sisters of Charity Federation in the Vincentian-Setonian Tradition.
