From centuries ago, the words of our founders still resound, full of wisdom and insight for today.
Our holy ones – Saints Elizabeth Ann Seton, Louise de Marillac, Vincent de Paul, and Servant of God Dorothy Day – encourage us to take up the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and giving to the poor, to turn again to a loving God, and to reach out to our neighbor in need.

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON
Deposit then in the heart of your Savior all your pains, and beg Him to give you a heart so conformed to His own that you may receive every cross as from the hand of His Father, that you may desire only what He desired, love only what He loved, and seek only what He sought, which was the Will of His Father every moment of His life.
And that bright and glorious Cross which we now drag through the mud and dirt, how beautiful and lovely it will appear when we find it opens the door of our eternal happiness to us. O, my dear friend, follow on with courage. You do not suffer alone, you well know. |

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Whoever wishes to be a disciple of Christ should expect [trials], but…should also hope that…God will give…the strength to bear afflictions and triumph over torments. |
| |
ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC
Choose the life of Jesus Crucified as the model for our lives so that His Resurrection may be a means for glory for us in Eternity. |

DOROTHY DAY
I was thinking how, as one gets older, we are tempted to sadness, knowing life as it is here on earth, the suffering, the Cross. And how we must overcome it daily, growing in love, and the joy which goes with loving. |
