January:  a new year of grace, God’s gift to us. It is a time to begin anew, to give thanks for Light – the light of Christ, born among us, revealed to all people. Linked with the feast of Epiphany is our special feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, January 4.

From centuries ago, the words of our founders still resound, full of wisdom and insight for today. Saints Elizabeth Ann Seton, Vincent de Paul, and Louise de Marillac walk with us in the radiant light of Christ.

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON

Loving you in God I cannot speak any other language — that we may be happy in the ages of Eternity is the fervent New Year wish of your affectionate friend.

The wintry storms of time shall be over, and the unclouded spring enjoyed forever. So, you see, …with God for our portion there is … no sorrow in the soul that waits on Him, though beset with present cares and gloomy prospects — for this freedom I can never be sufficiently thankful.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Let us look upon the Son of God. What a loving heart! What a flame of love!....Who could love with such surpassing love? Nobody but the Lord, who was so smitten by the love of His creatures as to leave the throne of his Father to come and take a body subject to weakness. And why? To establish among us by his word and example love for one another.

ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC
We are able to adore our Incarnate God with the angels by prayer, with the Kings by almsgiving and with the shepherds by fasting; and God will bless us.

I entreat Jesus, born into this world and the sole object of our love, to be your strength and consolation at the beginning of this new year.
