This month we celebrate Our Lady’s birthday (9/8) and honor her sorrows (9/15). We mark the Triumph of the Cross (9/14) and the triumph of St. Vincent de Paul, who passed through death to life (9/27). And with a broken world we pray for peace on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

From centuries ago, the words of our founders still resound, full of wisdom and insight for today. Saints Elizabeth Ann Seton, Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac, and Blessed Frederic Ozanam accompany us. They remind us that our loving God waits to meet us at every moment, in times of celebration as well as turmoil.

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON

Our best honor to Mary is the imitation of her virtues - her life a model for all conditions of life - her poverty, humility, purity, love - and sufferings! Mary teaching patience with life - …a heart of Mary for every duty.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Make me hold my own in the face of adversities, without trying to escape or evade the difficulties of life in this world….We must hold ourselves prepared for any event. When we are suffering, let us hope that God will deliver us; when God gives us consolations, let us lay up a store of gentleness and patience to make good use of later trials….Pray that God will unite hearts. War on all sides; misery on all sides….

ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC

God almost always gives me the grace to acknowledge and appreciate the opinions of others even when they are completely contrary to my own.

BLESSED FREDERIC OZANAM (Feast Day, September 9)

What a stormy but instructive era!  We will perhaps perish in it, but let us not complain about having entered it. Let us principally learn to defend our convictions without hating our adversaries, to love those who think differently than we do, to recognize that there are Christians in all camps and that God can be served today as always.
