Sister Mary Ellen McGovern

Regional Coordinator

Mary-Ellen-McGovernSister Mary Ellen McGovern, SC, was elected to a four-term as Regional Coordinator during Assembly 2015. Prior to her election, she served on the Congregation’s Steering Committee, which was responsible for establishing the agenda for the assembly. She also served at the Sisters of Charity Multi-Service Center (Casa Esperanza, 2010–2015) and on the Church Threshold Committee (2011–2014).

Sister Mary Ellen’s first ministry was in education. She taught at St. Gabriel School in Queens (1959–1965), St. John the Baptist in Brooklyn (1965–1971), and P.S. 5 in Manhattan (1971–1972). Sister Mary Ellen then went on to teach Communication Arts at the College of Mount Saint Vincent (1972–1978) before accepting a position as producer/director at Instructional Television (ITV), where she worked from 1978 to 1991. Sister Mary Ellen became Director of the School of New Resources at the College of New Rochelle in 1991, serving in that position until 2006.

Sister Mary Ellen earned a BA in English from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, and an MA and PhD in Communications from New York University.

Sister Mary Ellen entered the Sisters of Charity in 1956. She attended St. Paul the Apostle School and Cathedral High School, both in Manhattan.
